Fantasy or Fairy Tale

"Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles... "
"Doesn't sound too bad. I'll try and stay awake."
-The Princess Bride (1987)

Carol's pick: The Princess Bride (1987) - S. Morgenstern's classic tale of true love and high adventure. Clearly the most quotable movie ever.

Carol's other pick: The Lord of the Rings trilogy (2001-2003) - J.R.R. Tolkien's epic tale translated beautifully to the big screen.

  2. This seems like a good place to popularize my theory that the Star Wars Movies are really fantasy and not science fiction: "a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away" is basically another way of saving "once upon a time", while science fiction is usually concerned with depicting the effect of technology or scientific phenomena on our world; the force is an obvious stand in for magic; the story involves rescuing a princess and defeating an evil king/emperor who has used dark magic to usurp the throne; the various aliens are not depicted as having there own civilizations, but are more like dwarfs, elves and other fantasy creatures who are shown as living among or alongside humanity, and there's really no "scientific" reason for having light sabers, which are only necessary if you want your "Knights" to have sword fights in you supposedly science fiction movie.

Therefore, my answer is "The Empire Strikes Back."
